Eating my way through Bologna

My second trip to Bologna this month was equally as lovely as the first. My initial thought had been to visit Florence, as it’s only just over 35 minutes on the high-speed train, however I decided not to venture there on my own and instead made it my mission to have spaghetti bolognese in Bologna!

The rest of the crew was eager to explore, since none of them had visited the city before, so we decided to head up the two towers again.

But first – pizza!

I’d barely eaten anything on the flight in anticipation of all the delicious food I’d be having in Italy, so before we climbed up the almost 500 steps I grabbed a slice of pizza to fuel me up!

Once we made it up to the top, it was incredibly busy and very windy!

The time before I’d gone up relatively early in the morning so there wasn’t anyone else around, but this time it was the middle of the day. I’d definitely recommend going up early if you have the chance, as there’s not too much room to move at the top.

After making the trek back down we continued our stroll through the city, and I recognised some of the landmarks from my previous trip.

We passed by a beautiful archway, covered in gorgeous paintings on the ceiling.

We stopped to marvel at the intricate artwork and beautiful details.

That slice of pizza had been a tasty starter, but now it was time to find some more food! Last time we ended up slightly over ordering and having piles and piles of delicious prosciutto, salami, cheeses and more, so ended up not having any space for pasta! This time I wasn’t about to make that mistake, and made sure to save some space for spaghetti.

We started off with an aperol spritz (of course) which came with just a few nibbles! It turns out the traditional “bolognese” sauce is actually served with tagliatelle, not spaghetti, as it so often is in the rest of the world. Nevertheless, it was delicious, topped with plenty of freshly shaved parmesan. Yum!

The boys in the group complained that it was a small portion, but it was absolutely perfect for me and I wouldn’t have been able to manage another main course, as is the norm in Italy. Pasta is the main course for me, not the starter!

We couldn’t leave without a dessert though, so strolled over to Grom, an ice cream store that we’d passed by earlier. I can’t decide if I preferred this one, or the one from Venchi I’d had the week prior. Both were deliciously creamy and definitely worth the calories!

Totally full and satisfied, we walked back to the hotel just in time to catch the beautiful sunset from the hotel’s roof terrace.

A perfect ending to another lovely day out in Bologna. Diet starts now!

Could you do a “get ready with me” for work? Like show us what products you use, what lasts and what doesn’t last and such things. I always wonder how on earth you FA’s keep your looks so polished throughout the flights!

Sure, I’ve been meaning to do a post like that for a while actually! I always feel like such a mess at the end of the flights but I guess the red lipstick keeps the illusion going, haha! xx

Just wondering how Emirates changes their service to accomodate people during Ramadan? Do you just not do a meal service to certain cities? How does it all work πŸ™‚

No we still do the regular service as most people tend to eat on the flights, especially as there is a rule that you don’t have to fast if you’re travelling. Once it’s Iftar anyone who has been fasting is offered dates and water and we also have special Iftar boxes which contain sandwiches, snacks, fruit, etc! Some destinations are easy during Ramadan if it’s daytime, e.g. Middle East flights, as the majority of passengers fast so you don’t have much to do! πŸ™‚

    Hi Rachel,

Just discovered your blog! Absolutely love it! Such a great read and insight into the job and your lifestyle! Was wondering how long most of your layovers are? I’ve heard it’s usually around 24hrs, is this correct? Will be applying soon!

    Take care! X
