Freezing in Oslo

My roster this month took me back to the beautiful city of Oslo, Norway. I visited last year in April, and you can read about that trip here. I’m not entirely sure why I decided to bid for Oslo in January, possibly the coldest month of the year, and as well as that the sun sets at around 3:30 – 4pm!

The flight there was just over 6,5 hours, and at the last minute changed to a 2-class aircraft, which meant no first class! Myself and the other first class crew had to work in economy, which certainly made for an interesting change from first class!

We spotted some beautiful snowy scenes out of the window, which got me excited to land in Norway.

By the time we got to the hotel it was around 2pm, and since we no longer stay in the city we arranged to meet shortly to take the train into the city centre and do some exploring. I mentioned here that I was interested in going skiing but time wise it just wasn’t possible as it gets dark so early.

Despite having been to the city centre before I didn’t mind walking around again with the crew.

We were all well wrapped up against the cold!

We strolled through the streets passing by a few of the main attractions and taking lots of quick pictures so our hands didn’t freeze in the cold!

We strolled up towards the royal palace, passing by the university as well.

By this point the sun was already starting to set, which made for a lovely golden sky, although it did seem to keep getting colder and colder!

After a few more pictures with the guards at the Royal Palace (can anyone work out if this is the same guy that I took a picture with last time?!) we strolled on down towards the harbour.

We didn’t stay for too long as most of our fingers were already frozen by this point! Just long enough to enjoy the pretty sunset.

By this point we were all getting rather hungry, so decided to try and find somewhere serving up traditional Norwegian food. Luckily enough we’d spotted a place not too far from the train station so headed back in that direction.

I chose a reindeer stew, which I’ve eaten before with our family friends who live in the north of Norway. It was delicious and I’d definitely recommend giving it a try if you’re in Norway!

After we finished our early dinner it was already pitch black outside, so we made our way back to the train station, just stopping for a hot chocolate to take with us. The perfect ending to a very chilly day out!

    Dear Rachel,

I have a question about the interview of the Emirates. Are they call your previous work places to ensure about your abilities? How does it work?

Thank you for your answer in advance.

    Best regards,
    Esther

Hi Esther! I don’t remember them calling my previous employers, but I suppose if they wanted to do a background check they could do. It’s been over 4,5 years since I ddi my interview though so things might have changed a bit since then! Of course you should be truthful on your application just in case! Good luck 🙂

    Hi!

I follow your blog with great interest, and as I live in Oslo, I am curious:
What was the name of the restaurant- and at which hotel/area do you stay in Oslo?

Its cool that you bid for my home city, cold, little Oslo:-)

    Best
    Christian

Hi Christian! Sorry for the late reply, I must have missed this comment! I actually can’t remember the name of the restaurant, it was just by the main train station. Probably a bit of a tourist trap but everything we had was delicious! 🙂 We stay by the airport unfortunately, we used to stay in the city but that changed a while ago. 🙂
