Lion’s Head, Cape Town

A few days ago I was lucky enough to jet off to the beautiful city of Cape Town. I bid for the flight as it’s been a while since I last visited, and the beauty of South Africa never disappoints!

We had a great view of Table Mountain and the surrounding area on landing, and after arriving at the hotel early evening, it was time for me to call it a night. A few of the crew went out for steak and I was very tempted to join them, but 2 of the other girls and I had plans to get up early the next morning to hike Lion’s Head.

We were indeed up bright and early, and jumped in an Uber to the bottom of Lion’s Head, where there is a dedicated hiking trail up to the summit.

The weather was quite nice at the bottom, but as soon as we started making our way up the clouds followed us!

The hike itself starts out fairly easy, with a dirt track, and slowly progresses to steps, and eventually just the rock. At some points there are ladders and chains which you need to use to get up, and you’ll definitely need both hands. As we got closer to the top it started to rain so the rocks became very slippery, so do be careful!

As you can see at one point it got so cloudy that you couldn’t see anything! This was the only time I was a little bit scared, as the wind was extremely strong and we were worried we might get blown off the edge, haha!

Luckily after a while the rain stopped and the clouds started to clear, so the three of us climbed up the very last part and made it to the top of Lion’s Head… where we were greeted by a stunning rainbow!

After getting plenty of pictures at the top, it was time to make our way back down the slippery rocks. Luckily it was much quicker on the way down than up, and with the weather finally all cleared up, it was nice and sunny.

I still can’t get over the gorgeous views from the mountain!

I would love to go up for sunrise, or more realistically sunset! Next time it would be fun to try hiking up Table Mountain, as you can take the cable car back down from there.

Once we got back down to the bottom, we took a taxi towards the waterfront, where the sun was out in full force, and I treated myself to a delicious lunch at Tasha’s, a lovely restaurant that I can highly recommend.

If I’d had more time to spare I would have loved to go for a ride on the ferris wheel (which is free for crew members – you just need to show your ID!) and have a stroll along the waterfront.

Soon enough it was time to head back to the hotel (not before a quick stop at Woolworths to pick up some South African wine and steak) to get a bit of rest before the long flight home.

Stunning pics. Glad you enjoyed Cape Town. We live up the West Coast and if you ever fly into Cape Town in spring, you should come to see the wildflowers. Please never go on a hike on your own. Not safe nowadays. We are flying out of CPT to HKT via DXB on 25 Apr and return 21 May looking forward to fly EK as it will be our first trip on your airline. Enjou your blogs!

Thanks for reading Mari! I’d love to explore more of South Africa especially around the Cape Town area, sadly the layover is usually only 24 hours which can be a bit tight to squeeze things in. Hope you enjoy your flights on Emirates 🙂
