Table Mountain, Cape Town

2019 started off with a flight to one of my favourite places in the world, Cape Town. The flight over from Dubai is fairly long, just over 9 hours, but it was broken up a bit by a quick power nap in our crew bunks.

We landed into South Africa late afternoon, and having saved plenty of room for a big steak, a few of us agreed to meet for dinner.

Our hotel offers a free shuttle bus to the V & A Waterfront, where there are tons of great restaurants to choose from, so we headed over, ready for some dinner.

After a delicious steak and some even more delicious local South African wine, we called it a night.

The next morning, I was up bright and early, with a plan to get the cable car up to the top of Table Mountain. Well, it seemed the rest of Cape Town had the same idea!

I booked my ticket online, but once I got to the bottom there was a two hour wait to go up! I decided to just stick it out, I’d brought plenty of water with me and a good book, so made my way to the back of the queue, which only got longer as the morning went on. Top tip – make sure you’re in line before the cable car opens at 8am.

Otherwise do what I did last time, and go up for sunset, where the tickets are half price. Click here to see that post!

While the wait to go up was long, I was at least able to admire the beautiful view. Once inside, the cable car rotates 360 degrees, so you get a great view all round.

Once I stepped out the view was just so worth the wait! Every time I come back to Cape Town I remember how much I love this spectacular city.

I had a good walk around the top, stopping off for plenty of pictures. I even managed to write and post my postcards, which I was promised would be stamped with a special Table Mountain stamp.

I picked up a coffee to sip on whilst waiting to go back down – the queue was snaking all the way around the top so at least I had a fantastic view the whole time. Luckily it wasn’t quite as long a wait as the way up!

What I would have given to have had more time in Cape Town to spend lying on one of those beaches right there! Sadly the layover is just 24 hours, and my wake-up call was looming.

Before I knew it, it was time to make my way back down in the cable car, with one last view out to Lion’s Head and beyond.

I’m so pleased I made it up Table Mountain (while the rest of the crew were all fast asleep…) – I don’t think these views will ever get old! Thank you Cape Town!

Hey Rachel! I fund out about the Emirates FA career in Dubai and I am so hooked up. I love reading your blog and I would like to ask you some questions regarding your life in Dubai as Emirates employee. How many days a week do you have off days in Dubai? How are you spending them regarding tiredness – do you sleep all the time or are you going to the city or something? Are you able to have any pets in your Emirates accommodation as an cat for example that doesn’t need a company 24/7? How often do you see and hang out with your flatmate/s in Dubai? Thanks in advance! xoxo, Clo

      Hi Chloe!
There is no specific amount of time I have off per week in Dubai, in general it’s about 8 days a month, occasionally more. I definitely don’t sleep all the time, although it really depends on what time I’ve landed from a flight. I go to a gym class on most of my days off, otherwise I spend them catching up with friends/trying new cafés/going to the cinema/mall etc!
With regards to “going to the city”, Dubai is pretty spread out so there’s not really a central area as you might have in Europe, so if I go somewhere it’s usually a specific place.
Some crew accommodations allow pets, mine for example does, and lots of crew have cats.
I don’t see my flatmates loads as they are also both crew, and we all have different rosters, but if they are home then we catch up!
Hope these answers help and let me know if you have any more questions! x
