Mauritius – Welcome to paradise!

I’ve just got back from what may possibly have been my best layover ever!

After a relatively short and easy flight, we arrived in Mauritius around 10am. The captain suggested we go on a speedboat trip which would take us to a waterfall, “paradise island” and to do some snorkelling and swimming. I was totally up for it, as it was my first time to the island.

Here’s the view from my balcony; the resort we stay in is beautiful!DSCN7452

DSCN7456We made our way down to the beach and all of the economy crew (8 girls) showed up, as well as the two pilots. They negotiated a good price for us and we hopped in the boat ready to explore!DSCN7460 DSCN7462 DSCN7465We were a little apprehensive at first because we’d all felt quite a few rain drops and seen lots of grey clouds, but luckily as soon as we sped out the sky cleared and the sun showed up!DSCN7467 DSCN7470 DSCN7475 DSCN7483 DSCN7487The sea is so incredibly blue, it’s just amazing! Although it is winter in Mauritius at the moment, so the water was pretty cold.DSCN7497We sped on past the island, and the sea turned into a large river…as we turned the corner we spotted a waterfall!DSCN7500 DSCN7505Our driver took us right up close, and even managed to play photographer and steer the boat at the same time!DSCN7509 DSCN7513 DSCN7515Once we’d all got plenty of pictures of the waterfall, we climbed off the boat and up the rocks at the side.DSCN7518 DSCN7525We discovered a group of men just sitting at the top of the waterfall playing cards!DSCN7529 DSCN7530A few of us decided to be brave and climb across the rocks to the top of the waterfall.DSCN7535 DSCN7550 DSCN7555If I’m ever lucky enough to come back in summer when the water is warm enough to swim in, I’ll be jumping straight off that waterfall!DSCN7559 DSCN7566After clambering back down into the boat, we sped on off to our next stop. Paradise Island!DSCN7589And it really was like paradise. Turquoise water, white sands….and a lovely little table set up for us to have our lunch on!DSCN7594 DSCN7595The men barbecuing brought us over freshly made garlic bread, grilled fish and plenty of wine!DSCN7596 DSCN7601 DSCN7603 DSCN7629We stayed on the island enjoying the bbq and the sunshine, and then our driver took us to the next place.

We stopped off at a tiny little island, again with beautifully clear water and white sands. DSCN7634 DSCN7640The water felt slightly warmer than at the other places, although I didn’t go all the way under! We could have gone snorkelling here, but I’ll have to try that next time.DSCN7643 DSCN7654We found so many starfish (and put them back in the water carefully of course) and other sea creatures!DSCN7657As the sun was setting we got back in the boat and ended our adventure for the day!

The next morning after a lovely breakfast we made the most of the free water sports on offer at our hotel.DSCN7661Four of us decided to try out the kayaks, which was great fun. We kayaked over to the other side of the island, stopped off at a little beach and then came back. On the way there was a spot where loads of snorkelers were out – we stopped and saw tons of pretty little fish and corals!DSCN7662 DSCN7665All too soon it was time to get ready for the flight home and to leave this island paradise! 🙁

It was definitely one of my best layovers ever, and I can’t wait to go back one day!
