January Roster

Here goes the first roster post of 2017!

January is my “top bid” month, so the month I’m most likely to get the flights that I’ve requested. I actually got a few destinations that I asked for, although not the days off that I wanted to go and visit my sister Lizzie and her boyfriend Jarett in Vietnam.

I’ll be heading off to:

  • LYS (Lyon, France)
  • LYS
  • OSL (Oslo, Norway)
  • IKA (Tehran, Iran)
  • OSL
  • SEP (Safety & Emergency Procedures)
  • ATH (Athens, Greece)

Both of the layovers in Lyon are 48 hours, so any tips of things to do or nearby places to visit would be much appreciated!

I’d love to go skiing on my Oslo layovers, we will have to see if that’s possible or if there isn’t enough time. Fingers crossed! Otherwise I’m hoping to take a Fjord boat tour that I didn’t manage to do when I was there last time.

My layover in Athens is also 48 hours, but with a quick stop in Larnaca on the way, where we will stay on the aircraft.

All in all a nice roster, apart from the one thing I’m dreading – SEP! My yearly recurrent exams (Safety and Emergency Procedures) are at the end of the month, so if I’m a bit absent from the blog it’ll be because I’m studying!

Merry Christmas!

Hi Rachel πŸ˜‰ I have been reading your blog for quiet a long time and I really love it!
If you want enjoy skiing in Europe, you have much better to take the chance while in Lyon. There are very nice ski resorts within 2hours from Lyon with regular ski buses! For exemple Chamrousse is fine for one day skiing and is not even 2 hours from Lyon airport πŸ˜‰ Or, I love Les Deux Alpes – veery big and very nice station about 2h from Lyon πŸ˜‰ You can check here all stations near Lyon: https://www.j2ski.com/ski_resorts/Airports/Lyon_St_Exupery.html

    Enjoy!

p.s. Do not forget to eat some raclette or tartiflette in winter France πŸ˜‰

Thanks for the tips Veronika! I need to plan a bit better really as I don’t have any of my ski stuff here in Dubai so it didn’t happen this time, but maybe I can squeeze in a mini ski holiday somewhere in February! πŸ™‚

Just stumbled upon your blog, it’s wonderful! My favorites in Lyon (the city I grew up in) are: walking through the vieux Lyon to enjoy a crΓͺpe there, taking the funiculaire (the hill-train, if you will) up to the basilica in FourviΓ¨re to enjoy the panoramic view of Lyon, walking up the Croix-Rousse hills… one of my favorite jazz clubs and second homes is there, it’s called La Clef de VoΓ»te, and has local bands playing every night. Hope you’ll enjoy your stay!

Thanks for all of the tips Phil! The first trip we did indeed go up to Fourviere, and the second trip we hired a car and drove to Annecy! Very pretty πŸ™‚

Merry Christmas and congrats on all of your destinations coming up! Just curious, is your flight to Tehran a turnaround or a layover? Good luck on your SEP exams. Does it get easier after doing it for a few years?

Thanks Gabriel! Tehran is a turnaround as it’s only around 2hrs flight time from Dubai. Thank you, it doesn’t really get any easier but at least I know more or less what to expect!

Oslo is lovely, but dark in the winter so a boat trip is not the best – that is amazing in the summer – there are Nordic ski trails at Holmenkollen – where the ski jump is – you can get a tryk or tram there from central Oslo, it is very pretty with places where you can stop for a hot drink, all lit up with bright white lights and to add to the magical feel the trails are all through the woods. I lived there many years ago and loved it. There are so many things to do all year round. Have a happy Christmas

Oh that sounds amazing, thanks so much for the recommendation! I’ll definitely make sure to do that on one of my trips there. Merry Christmas!
