I recently asked you guys on Instagram if you had any questions related to Emirates, flying, or general life as cabin crew, and here are your questions and answers! If you have any more that I haven’t answered here, you can check out my previous Q&A, or leave a comment down below. 🙂
Which destinations are the most and least popular for crew?
Most of the destinations which are places that people would like to go on holiday are the popular ones, such as Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires (a combined 5 day trip), Mauritius, Phuket, Bali, etc. The least popular are usually the turnarounds (where you go there and back without a layover), especially the ones which leave in the middle of the night!
What are your highlights and lowlights of your time as an air hostess?
Highlights would of course have to be all of the amazing countries I’ve been to, including places I’d barely even heard of before going Emirates. Lowlights…probably dealing with rude, nasty passengers who think they own the plane (luckily you never have to see them again as soon as the flight lands!) as well as cleaning up all sorts of bodily fluids, vomit etc!
Among all the cities you’ve visited which would you love to return to?
There are still so many places that I’m yet to visit, but if I could choose anywhere to return to it would probably be Florence. I spent an afternoon there with my boyfriend whilst he worked the flight to Bologna, so we only had 24 hours and it wasn’t even close to enough! I fell in love with Italy straight away, and Florence just has it all, from the amazing architecture to the best food ever.
Do you know any flight attendants who failed the interview for Emirates the first time but then tried again and succeeded?
Yes, there are plenty who didn’t pass the interview the first time and tried again and made it! If you’ve failed but really want it, I’d say just try and work out what might have gone wrong the first time, prepare yourself and go for it!
How much time before the flight do you have to be at the airport?
We have to check in 2 hours before a flight for our briefing.
Can you eat food on the plane that is meant for passengers/leftover?
Yes, once the service in economy or business class is finished we can have whatever is leftover. We also have crew meals which are just for us. In first class it’s a “dine on demand” service, which means we can’t eat any of the passenger meals until just before landing.
Do you make your own meals to eat on the plane or do you eat the aircraft meals?
A mixture of both really – depends on what I have in my fridge and how lazy I’m feeling! 😉 If I’m cooking something anyway I’ll quite often make double so I have something to take on the flight, but sometimes I just eat whatever is onboard.
Do flight attendants use the hot water on board for drinks and food for themselves? I’m always reading how dirty the water system is on board airplanes so I wondered if it’s the same for Emirates!
I have to say I’ve read plenty of things online about the water system never being cleaned etc., but I honestly can’t survive a flight without tea or coffee so I definitely use it, haha! I have no idea how much truth there is to it, but surely if we are serving all our hot drinks (and drinking them ourselves as well!) it can’t be that bad…hopefully!
What’s your favourite destination?
I honestly think this is the hardest question on the list! I can’t pick a favourite but if I had to narrow it down I would choose Cape Town for the incredible scenery, Mauritius for the beautiful beaches, Hong Kong (although I can’t pinpoint anything specific, I just love the vibes there!), anywhere in Australia just for the amazing coffee, and probably a few cities in Europe as it’s a slice of home!
Is there a list of make-up the Emirates crew can/can’t wear? Which lipstick do you use?
Yes, we have to wear foundation + powder, blusher/bronzer, eyeshadow/eyeliner, mascara, eyebrows should be groomed, and of course the famous red lipstick 🙂 There is no specific brand that we have to use, and I have about 5 different red lipsticks that I alternate between! Mostly I use the Sephora Collection Color Lip Last Lipstick in No. 20, or the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Nosferatu, but that’s fairly dark so you have to use a light hand!
