The Dubai Diaries at home: Dubai Frame & Sundowners at Souk Madinat

As much as I love travelling and exploring new destinations around the world, I live in a city that has so much to offer! My best friend Lucy last came to stay 2 years ago, so in search of some winter sun, she flew out to stay with me in Dubai for a few days.

I had planned a few things for us to do, as we’d already ticked off a few items on the list previously, but with an ever-changing city, there were still more to be seen!

Dubai Frame

A new structure that has been open just over over a month, the Dubai Frame is meant to frame Old Dubai on one side, and New Dubai on the other side.

Unfortunately it was the weekend, so there was a bit of a queue to get to the top. Priced at 50 dirhams, it’s fairly affordable compared to most other attractions in Dubai. The queue moved quickly, and soon we were making our way 150m up to the top of the frame.

There is a brief introduction to Old Dubai, which is fairly similar to the Dubai Museum, so we quickly made our way up to the top, to be greeted by spectacular views of the city’s skyline.

There is also a glass floor, which you can walk along if you don’t have a fear of heights!

It’s really interesting to see out across the city, comparing old with new. The old part of the city has barely a skyscraper in sight, while that’s pretty much all that makes up the newer parts of Dubai.

Since it was nearing lunchtime, after completing our tour of the Frame, we headed back downstairs, where you can watch a 3D vision of the future of Dubai, before popping over to the Clinton St food truck just outside to grab a bite to eat. The most delicious burgers!

Souk Madinat

Our next plan for the afternoon was a wander around Souk Madinat, which is one of my favourite places in Dubai! A take on the traditional “souks” of Dubai, this one encompasses hotels, shops, restaurants, cafes and beautiful waterways. Not to mention a wonderful view out towards the sea, and of the Burj al Arab.

After stopping for a coffee inside to get away from the heat for a bit, we strolled through the pretty walkways, admiring some of the trinkets on sale.

We decided it was time for a cocktail, so popped up a level to Folly by Nick & Scott, which has a great sundowner menu, from 3-7pm. We couldn’t resist the delicious-sounding prosecco pops… prosecco with a raspberry ice lolly!

We chilled out on the comfy sofas, chatting and catching up on the last few months of our lives. Lucy lives in Manchester, and the flights are much harder for me to get as only 1 of 3 daily flights has a first class available, so it’s been a while since we’ve managed to see each other. It was so good to catch up!

We watched the sun slowly start to set, and enjoyed another cocktail on the rooftop.

After our drinks, we strolled back through the souk, and towards another of the hotels in the complex, Jumeirah Al Naseem, which has a turtle rehabilitation centre. Although it was getting dark, we were lucky enough to spot a giant turtle swimming about in the water!

From here we made our way towards the beach, for a little walk along the sand.

There was a beautiful sunset, and we walked right up towards the Burj Al Arab, before calling it a night and heading home for some dinner and a girly movie.

The perfect first day of our staycation!
