A Day In The Life Of A Cabin Crew – Dubai To Perth

I thought it would be fun to do another diary style post of a day in the life on a longer flight, this time to Perth!

The departure time for this flight was 02:45, and we need to be at headquarters 2 hours before departure. Since my sister was staying with me in Dubai, we’d had a busy couple of days! I usually try to get a few hours rest before night flights, and make sure my suitcase is packed and ready to go beforehand.

Table Mountain, Cape Town

2019 started off with a flight to one of my favourite places in the world, Cape Town. The flight over from Dubai is fairly long, just over 9 hours, but it was broken up a bit by a quick power nap in our crew bunks.

We landed into South Africa late afternoon, and having saved plenty of room for a big steak, a few of us agreed to meet for dinner.

Our hotel offers a free shuttle bus to the V & A Waterfront, where there are tons of great restaurants to choose from, so we headed over, ready for some dinner.

January Roster

It’s been quite a while since I last posted on here, so thanks for sticking around! First of all I’d like to wish everyone all the best for 2019, and I hope you will still enjoy following along on my travels around the world this year.

I know this month has already started, but hopefully you won’t mind me sharing my roster anyway.

  • CPT – Cape Town, South Africa
  • PER – Perth, Australia
  • Reserve

The year started off with a flight to one of my favourite destinations, Cape Town, which I’ll be blogging about soon.

Next up was a trip to Perth, where I was hoping to catch up with my friend Taylor (who I met through her blog, Volare) but sadly the timing didn’t work out. Next time!

After that, my reserve month starts! In fact, it officially started yesterday, but I was given a day off. How it works for the rest of the month, is that every day at 6pm (or sometimes before) my roster will be updated for the next day. It could be either a day off, a standby (a block of 4, 6, or 8 hours, either at home or at the airport) or I could be assigned a flight straight away.

Right now I’m patiently waiting for it to change, and refreshing our crew app every few minutes! 😉

If you follow me on Instagram I’ll be posting where I get sent this month, here’s hoping for some nice destinations!

Bangkok, Thailand – Bang Kachao, An Island Escape in the City

I have been to Bangkok so many times over the past 6 years with Emirates, and it’s a destination I’m always happy to return to. Delicious Thai food, amazing cheap massages, and a short-ish flight makes it a popular destination for almost everyone!

However, as with every destination that you’ve been to more times than you can count, you end up getting into your routine there. (See above – Thai food and a great massage!). So when I was there recently and one of our crew suggested visiting a small island in the city for a day out, I jumped at the chance!

Bang Kachao, known as “Bangkok’s Green Lung” is the perfect escape from the busy city – a forested island with cycling trails, cafés and a nature park just waiting to be explored.

We took a taxi from our hotel to the river and jumped on a tiny boat to take us across to the island. The boat cost about 10 Baht each!

December Roster

The last roster of 2018! Don’t ask me how this has come around so quickly – I feel like this whole year has just sped by!

I’m hoping it’ll be a good month, although I’m working in business class again which will be a bit of a change!

In December I’ll be off to:

  • KUL – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • JED – Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (turnaround)
  • LHR – London Heathrow, UK
  • Annual Leave
  • DUS – Düsseldorf, Germany
  • SEP Exams
  • SFO – San Fransisco, USA

First up is a trip to Kuala Lumpur. Funnily enough I hadn’t been in years, and now I’ve been rostered it two months in a row! The timing is a bit better this trip, so let’s see what I get up to there.

After that a fairly quick turnaround to Jeddah and back, followed straight away by a flight to Heathrow. I’m trying to swap these two together, but let’s see if it happens.

Then it’s time for my leave! Sadly it’s not over Christmas, so I haven’t decided yet what I’m going to do – I have 7 days so any suggestions for places to go are more than welcome!

Next up is a trip to Düsseldorf, which I’ve been rostered with my friend Sebastian, so I’m very much looking forward to that. We’re planning to go to the Christmas markets and perhaps make the trip to Cologne.

Straight after I have my yearly recurrent exams, so I will need to get studying for those!

Last up is San Fransisco, which I haven’t visited in quite a while, so although I’m sure it’ll be a very busy flight as always, I’m looking forward to doing some exploring on the layover.

And that’s it for my December roster. As I said, I can’t quite believe how quickly time flies – I’ll be celebrating my 6 year anniversary of joining Emirates just before Christmas!
