Exploring Zagreb, Croatia

After my flight to Stockholm I was rostered another new destination, in fact I was lucky enough to visit Zagreb twice in a row!

For my first flight there, the weather was absolutely perfect. Despite the chilly temperatures, the sun was shining and I was ready to explore. From our hotel it was a leisurely 15 minute walk into town, passing by many beautiful old buildings.

I spent the next couple of hours just strolling through the city, enjoying the beautiful sunshine.

Having not eaten much on the flight, I was starting to get a bit peckish, so decided to try a local speciality – burek. A delicious pastry filled with either cheese, spinach, potatoes, or meat, and typically eaten for breakfast with plain yoghurt. I walked past a bakery and picked up a hot, freshly baked meat-filled burek, which was devoured in no time!

I passed by the cathedral, which sadly had one spire under construction. There is also a huge market in Zagreb which is on every day, but unfortunately it was pretty much closed by the time I arrived mid-afternoon.

I had agreed to meet a few of the other crew (almost all of the crew were Croatian so it was just a few of us who were remaining!) for dinner, so walked back to the hotel.

We then made our way to a lovely local restaurant that the purser had been to on a previous layover in Zagreb and recommended. I had the most delicious dinner of “Zagrebacki”, a kind of schnitzel filled with ham and cheese. Yum!

For my next layover in Zagreb, the weather had changed completely! From sunny blue skies to the thickest snowstorm, all in just a few days.

Once again we flew over beautiful snowy mountains on the way there.

We touched down in Zagreb and decided to head straight out, as it was a couple of the others first time in the city.

Slightly different weather this time!

We strolled into the city, stopping for a drink in one of the cafes along the way. I didn’t manage to take many pictures this time!

After enjoying our drinks, it was time to find some food. Since I’d enjoyed our meal at the restaurant so much last time, we decided to head back to the same one! Tried and tested, and everybody enjoyed the delicious food.

Before we knew it, it was dark outside and we made our way back to the hotel to call it a night. Not as much exploring the second time around, but still a very enjoyable layover!

The next morning there was just time for a spot of breakfast before the wake up call and flight back to Dubai. It hadn’t stopped snowing overnight either!

I’m so happy I got to explore a new city, not only once but twice. Thanks Zagreb for two lovely layovers!

I’m so happy you enjoyed my hometown! I’ve been reading your blog for cca 4 years 🙂
You literally had layovers during the coldest week of the winter here! The weather months before was exceptionally warm and now it’s clear and sunny again 😀
