Meeting old friends in New York

I’m back from one of my favourite cities – New York!

As soon as I saw it pop up on my November roster I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to meet up with my friends Stephen and Colin. While I was interrailing with Lucy in the summer of 2012, we met them in Berlin and stayed in touch. I had a trip to NYC in July (or was it August? I can’t remember!) but they were off travelling so we couldn’t meet.

We landed into JFK around 8am and once we finally got to the hotel (we happened to be there on the day of the NYC Marathon so traffic was pretty bad!) I was ready for a nap!

Stephen, Colin and I had arranged to meet at 5, so I had a few hours to kill. And what better to do in New York than shop!

I made my way along 5th Avenue, browsing the shops. I’d planned on finally upgrading to an iPhone 6 so headed over to the Apple Store near Central Park…only to be told the wait was 3 hours! Who on earth waits 3 hours to buy a phone?! That was not happening!

As I mentioned it was also the NYC Marathon, so I strolled along watching the runners for a while. It was super busy but there was a great atmosphere!

I wandered along back towards Times Square and did my shopping (biggest Forever 21 ever?!) and made my way back to the hotel.

Once I was back in the hotel and ready to go, the boys were waiting for me in the lobby! It was so awesome to see them after over 2 years!

Seeing as I’m not too familiar with New York (other than where we stay, which is basically Times Square!) they suggested going to the Lower East Side for some dinner.

We walked past the Rockefeller Centre and saw the ice rink, where loads of people were out skating.

We decided on Mexican for dinner, and ordered huge burritos. American size!

It was still pretty early so we decided to go and have a few drinks before I had to get back to the hotel.

The boys tried to get me to drink beer – it wasn’t happening! I couldn’t believe how cheap the drinks were, especially compared to Dubai prices. We were paying less than what I’d pay for 1 drink in Dubai for 3!

All too soon it was time to get a bit of sleep before my early wake-up call the next morning.

Thanks guys for showing me around – hopefully next time I’m in town I’ll have a bit longer!

Hello Rachel this is Aya am from Egypt and I’ve been a huge fan of your amazing Blog for such a long time now. I applied for Cabin Crew in Emirates and I was successful , but am on hold now because all the training courses are fully booked. Anyway I was just wondering cause am such a makeup fanatic does Emirates provide u with discounts in makeup shops in Dubai or do you get to have a discount at the Duty Free or should I just order my makeup online cause it’s much cheaper. I know it sounds silly but I was just curious. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with us it was such a motivation for applying to this job xoxo

Hi Aya! Thanks for reading 🙂 Good news, we do get discounts in some make-up stores (I think Sephora and Clarins, although there may be more I’m not aware of!) We also get a discount at duty free in almost every airport including Dubai. So you shouldn’t have any problems getting your make-up! Congrats on getting the job! 🙂
