About

Hi there!

I’m Rachel, an English girl who lived in Austria for 6 years before moving to Dubai. I currently work as cabin crew for a well known international airline that flies all over the world. I love travelling, exploring new places and trying new food!

I hope you enjoy reading about my experiences and travels! πŸ™‚

Hey Rachel! 4th generation Texan here, and a retired airline guy. Glad you’ve been rostered back to the “MetroMess” as we call it! Not sure where your rodeo was the last time you were here, but the Stockyards area in Ft. Worth is always a LOT of fun, with real Western shops catering to real Western cowboys! Grapevine, the suburb bordering DFW Airport on the north, has a cool little and extremely walkable little downtown area. If you want Mexican, Esparzas just off of Main St. in Grapevine is INCREDIBLE (but beware the margaritas!). Ft. Worth also has some GREAT museums, such as the MOMA, the American Museum of Western Art, and the Kimbell. If you’re into theme parks, Six Flags Over Texas is celebrating its 60th birthday this year and is always a lot of fun. Lots of great coasters! The Dallas side of the area is much more about money: making it, spending it, showing it off. Dallas is home to the original Neiman-Marcus, the sole remaining department store downtown, and is worth a visit–if you do, plan to try and lunch at the Zodiac Room. If you have any more questions just shoot me an email! Safe travels and blue skies! –Bill

Thanks so much for all of the great tips Bill! The last time I was there we drove to Fort Worth and had a look around the Stockyards and all of the Western shops, and ate some Texan barbecue as well! I will have to check out Grapevine next time, it’s not too far from our hotel I think. Rachel

    Hi Rachel!

I’ve been reading your blog for about a year now and you inspired me to apply for Emirates πŸ™‚ And thanks to you, I will be moving to Dubai in a couple months to join the company as a cabin crew!

I have one question, I would like to start my own blog to share my experiences with friends and family but I’m not sure if I have to contact HR or media relations to get a permission? How did you go about that if you don’t mind me asking?

Thank you for inspiring me and many others. I hope to meet you one day! xoxo

Hi Emmy! Thanks so much for reading, and congratulations on getting the job, how exciting!! Well, I’m not sure now if you would have to – when I started my blog I didn’t contact anyone at all. They tell you the social media rules when you join but I think as long as you’re not posting anything negative I don’t see why it should be a problem at all! πŸ™‚ xx

    Hi Rachel,
One advise… kindly read Emirates policy about posting in internet any pictures or information related to the airline…. Everything you are publishing that shows you are an Emirates employee (including pictures from work) needs to be approved by the airline otherwise you may lose your job dear.
    Regards,

Hi Diana, thanks so much for your comment. Don’t worry, I have been in touch with Emirates many times regarding my blog – in fact they have even asked me to advertise on here!
Also don’t forget I can see all email addresses which have been used to leave comments on here, so if you’re from IT support as you mention feel free to send me an email which is not using your private email address if there is anything else you wanted to mention! Rachel

Ineed it’s my private email as I am not writing to you as airline representative. As you know it’s not IT support who spies on these things. πŸ˜€
It was just an advise as it happened in the past that some publications made by our staff were investigated.
        Good luck!

    Hi Rachel πŸ™‚

I love your blog – the layout, your writing style.. everything πŸ™‚

I’m training to become Cabin Crew with BA, and I have started my own blog. At the moment it’s pretty.. amateur lol.

Please may I ask what website you have used for yours as the layout is awesome & I would love to have something similar πŸ™‚

        Hi Rachel πŸ™‚

Oh cool, I hope you enjoy reading!

You may see that I ended up figuring out how to do the same layout – I apologise! I just loved how yours looked and it had everything I was wanting! πŸ™‚

I hope you don’t think I’ve copied you too much!
My colours are black & gold πŸ™‚ & I still need to change my profile picture ha ha.

Quick question – I can’t seem to get rid of the pinned picture to the top of each post, but the box is unchecked so it shouldn’t be there anyway, any help?

        xx

      • January 7, 2018 / 4:45 pm

        You’re so welcome!
I’m trying to get myself associated with people that have travel/Cabin Crew blogs to understand the kindve thing they talk about etc & to get into the community so to speak haha.

Yes, I thought as much as I couldn’t see what I wanted on WordPress themes. I have got the same Pipdig one now (sorry!) – it’s so good and it has exactly what I wanted. My theme colours are different though so hopefully you don’t think I’m copying you too much ‍♀️.
I can’t seem to get rid of the picture that is pinned to the top of every post though? The box is unchecked so it shouldn’t be set up like that.. annoying :/ I’ve asked Pipdig to help lol.

Ahhh awesome. Let me know what you think. πŸ™‚
I think I may have subscribed to yours

Hi Gabie! Yes, they do have open days/ recruitment days in the US, but at the moment I believe there is still a freeze on hiring. Keep an eye on the Emirates Careers recruitment page and you should be able to see when the next open days are and which locations! πŸ™‚

Hello Rachel! I sooooooo love your blog <3 You deserve all the blessings. I really want to be a cabin crew like you. Would you know if the recruitment process in Dubai is easier that it is in other countries? I'm planning to go to Dubai next year to find my luck. I'm from the Philippines. Are they strict if your height is just 5'2?

Thanks so much for your lovely comment! πŸ™‚ I think the recruitment process is the same in every country, it just depends on how many people show up! You can see all of the requirements on the Emirates Careers page if you google it – when I applied there was no minimum height, only an arm reach of 212cm (which still applies) but now you have to be minimum 160cm, so you should be fine πŸ™‚ Good luck!

Hello Rachel I really like your photos, it seems like you love your job and like you are having so much fun as a flight attendant. Well, it has always been my dream to start up a career like that. Could you please talk to me about the training? Is it hard? Are there any chances that somebody might give up? What does it include? Thank you Anyway ❀️

Hi there! Thanks so much for reading, I’m so glad you enjoy my blog πŸ™‚ The training can be tough but just because you have to process and learn a lot of new information over a short period of time. It would be quite unlikely that someone would give up as most people have waited a long time or tried multiple times to get the job!

Hi Rachel, love reading your blog! so interesting.
Do you know if there is an age limit to applying for a job as Emirates cabin crew? Is late 30s / early 40s acceptable or is there a age cut off? Also, do many of the crew have children? Just wondering how the job might fit in with having kids.
    Thanks!

Hi Kelly! Thanks so much for reading πŸ™‚ There isn’t an official age limit to be hired but I think mid-30’s is about the maximum I know of anyone being hired. Loads of crew have kids but most of them wait until after they’ve already joined as you then get maternity leave etc. (And I guess lots of crew want to travel as much as possible in the first few years before they have any kids) Let me know if you have any more questions πŸ™‚ x

Hi Rachel πŸ™‚ greetings from Philippines πŸ™‚ I randomly came across your blog for some references about whether to become a flight attendant or proceed in my current college degree. I have hesitations though and hopefully you could clarify some for me? :)) Regarding about fitness, I’m actually the type to freely eat what I want and feed myself to my fullest desires but I ain’t fat fat though I’m still chubby, is it a necessary requirement? To look and stay fit, I mean. And secondly, as a flight attendant, are there benefits that your family could get? Cause I somewhat hope I could bring them with me with expenses covered by emirates? πŸ™‚ I find your blog so wonderful because it enables me to actually witness your FA life, hope you could answer them for me πŸ™‚ God Bless and Stay awesome!!

Hi Metz! Thanks for reading my blog! You definitely will need to be within a healthy BMI and maintain a good weight as you will get weighed during the first training and then again 6 months later. Other than that your immediate family (parents and siblings) will be able to get cheap tickets on a standby basis (which means if there is a spare seat on the plane they will get on) but certainly not all expenses covered, you will have to pay for that yourself. If they need a visa to come to Dubai you would have to take care of that as well and as Emirates provides the accommodation they would be allowed to stay for up to 60 days per year as long as your flatmates agree. Let me know if you have any more questions, good luck! πŸ™‚

    Hey there!
I’m an Australian girl really excited about applying to become Emirates cabin crew later this year. I am very much into my health and fitness though and i was wondering if you found that challenging at all? If you do exercise, how often do you get the chance to? Is it hard to eat healthy and be a flight attendant? Random question as well but is there Crossfit in Dubai? (if you’ve heard of it!) Within your accommodation in Dubai, how many others are you sharing a home with, and do you have the option of requesting to stay with new friends you’ve made on the job?

Hi Jessica, thanks so much for reading! You do have to be motivated to work out and eat healthily in this job as it can be so easy to just collapse into bed after night flights and be tempted by junk food but there are plenty of crew who make it work! You have more than enough days off every month as well as 24 hour layovers and all of the hotels have a gym (as well as all of the crew accommodation). There are plenty of crossfit places in Dubai as well but I haven’t tried it! You share with either 1 or 2 people, most of the apartments are 3 bedroom and most of the time you get your own bathroom. You can ask to move if you find a vacant room as well. Good luck πŸ™‚

I have been very interested in becoming a flight attendant for awhile now. Your blog makes me more and more eager to take on this career. I have just a few questions for you and I would love it if you took the time to answer them!
Is it ever to early to apply? It is currently March and will not be graduating college until December. I would like to begin my flight attendant career right out of college though.
How do you know which airlines are the best for you? I am looking to travel far and wide and do not mind moving away from home. I am hoping to experience new things like lifestyles and cultures with this career.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Jessica! Thanks for reading. I would suggest applying around August or September, at the moment recruitment is on hold anyway and that seems to be the time most people seem to think things will start up again. Once you get the job they would expect you to move to Dubai within a couple of months…I did my open day mid September and joined mid December. As for which airline is best for you, you’ll have to do your own research! Every airline has different rosters and layovers, I randomly chose Emirates because I saw an advert in a magazine and it seemed like the perfect fit! Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions nearer the time! xx

Hey Rachel. Quick question. Thinking about applying to Emirates but wondering about the language situation… I’m a native English speaker but don’t speak any other languages fluently. I know Emirates doesn’t have any requirements besides fluent English but I’m wondering how a big a disadvantage only having English is for getting hired? I know its hard for you to say for sure but curious about what you think based on your experiences with other cabin crew (aka do most speak multiple languages?).

Hey Meg! Sorry for the late reply, I must have missed this comment! Honestly I don’t think it’s a big disadvantage at all, as you say English is the main language that is used and spoken onboard so you shouldn’t have any issues at all. A huge number of crew only speak English (i.e. most people from the UK, Australia, US, New Zealand, etc.) so you don’t have anything to worry about! Good luck πŸ™‚ xx

    Hi Rachel,
I was wondering what an average age is of a cabin crew member; I’m 27.

I was also wondering if you could tell me what its like living off the salary of a cabin crew member. I saw an average range was about $2,000 (USD). Is it tough to manage a lifestyle off of that?

    Thank you!!

    Hi there,

Thank you for doing this, very informative!

Do you often work with men? I’m a man, 23, do you think I have a chance if I apply as a flight attendant? Do they equally hire men? I’ve very rarely seen men doing the flight attendant job, which is why I ask.

Hi πŸ™‚ First of all, I absolutely love your blog and your Instagram! And after spending some time thinking about it, I have now decided to apply for a job at Emirates. I was wondering whether there are any restrictions concerning physical appearance apart from height and weight? Additionally, I was wondering whether you had any experience in gastronomy when you applied and whether it is required?
Also, I am worried about the interview as I get very nervous in situations like this and I don’t want to appear shy or awkward. Do you have any tips?

Hi there! Thanks so much for reading πŸ™‚ Other than height/weight you shouldn’t have any visible tattoos or piercings (other than ears of course) and apart from that there aren’t really many restrictions! I did have work experience, I had been working part time since the age of 15. It doesn’t have to be specifically gastronomy, anything with customer service or that is people related helps! My main tip is just to be yourself, I was so nervous during my interview and was convinced I’d screwed it up! Good luck πŸ™‚

I am thinking when they come back here in Larnaca for recruitment to give it a try BUT my problem is that now i have a babe and a husband of course. Do you know any crew members that they are mothers or any tip on that?do they accept a lady with a kid?

    • December 13, 2015 / 1:27 pm

Hi there! Hm it’s a tricky one really. The thing is they would employ you and give you a residence visa but not for your husband or baby, so you’d have to try and get them to Dubai at a later point. I’m not really sure how exactly it would work!

There’s one more thing which I’d like to know, and I guess you’ll be the right person to answer that. My girlfriend and I, both are experienced in the industry and are thinking of joining Emirates, but are afraid that the roster would not always be in our favour and we’ll not be able to see each other for long periods. Is there any possibility, like if we notify the rostering team that we prefer to fly to together, that they put us on the same flight, some times at least ?
Dubai is an islamic country and we both respect their culture and we’re okay having separate accommodations as long as we see each other regularly. Again, your blog helped me know and understand a lot of things, a lot better. Thanks a lot. Wish you a lot more awesome memories. Stay safe and healthy.
    Respect.

    Regards

Hi there! I personally think if you want to make it work, you definitely can. After your 6 month probationary period you can swap onto each others flights, and if you’re both crew you can stay over at each others apartments at any time. There used to be a “buddy bid” option to bid to fly with your friends/bf/gf but unfortunately that got removed about 2 years ago. I think it’s actually easier having a boyfriend/girlfriend who is cabin crew as they understand your schedule and know how tiring it can be! πŸ™‚

Thx you my dear for answering me
But now I have very concerned about something most of older crew I see here say this job cause you back pain tell me your opinion about this
Does the crew lift heavy thing or just pushing the food Car in the plane

    • November 3, 2015 / 5:34 pm

We are constantly lifting things, such as heavy containers in the galley. Also pushing carts in the cabin but these are not too heavy.

Hi Rachel! I am so inspired by your blog. I was up half the night reading it and will probably be up half the night tonight too! It’s been a dream of mine for a number of years to be a flight attendant and I am now seriously thinking of perusing it. I’m now 29 years old so I hope I haven’t left it too late! My short term goal is to do two years domestic here at home in Australia, and then move on to international. I want to be working for Emirites and living in Dubai by the time I am 35. Wish me luck!
I want to say a big thank you for taking the time to publish your thoughts and experiences. I am using it as inspiration to keep me focused on my goals and dreams.
    Kindest regards,
    Vicky xox

I am new crew at Emirates and I wonder do you have time to cook for your self since your induction til now or most of time buy from resturants???

    • October 23, 2015 / 6:13 pm

Hi there! Well since I’ve been here coming up to 3 years now, I have found a balance between cooking for myself and ordering in/eating out. During training I used to take food with me quite often. Now I usually cook if I have a bit of time off in Dubai! πŸ™‚

Hi, stumbled upon your blog and stayed for awhile! I’m just a guy, whose girl is in the final stages of applying to one of the elite carriers in your region. If hired, she’d have to relocate to Dubai. I guess my question is (and please be honest af), how many people in your flight attendant friend circle have managed to keep the “long distance” thing going? I imagine the odds are not good:( Anyhow, any insights into that realm would be very much appreciated. Followed you on Insta!! Thanks.

    • September 24, 2015 / 8:07 am

Hi there! I’ve just answered a similar question to this…basically I think it can work but you both have to make it work. My ex-flatmate was in a long distance relationship for 2 years and she’s now married and living in Hong Kong with her husband. So if you’re both dedicated it definitely can work – having cheap tickets help as well!

Hi! And thank you for the blog. I’m considering of applying either for Etihad or Emirates, but my major concern is that the contract is binding for the first 3 years. Do you know if there are any ways of leaving the company like after 1 year if I don’t feel comfortable in the position for any reason? Most answers I’ve got is just that nobody really leaves any earlier than the 3 years, because of the bonuses. I have been flying before, it’s just that I’m not sure if I would feel at home in Dubai.
    Thanks

    • September 24, 2015 / 8:06 am

No the contract is not binding! You have to pay back a little bit of money if you leave before 1 year is up (which is understandable since they pay for your flight tickets, training, accommodation etc) but other than that you can leave at any time with 1 month notice period! 3 years is just the average contract length in Dubai as that’s how long the residence visa is before it needs to get renewed.

Hi Rachel, I am full of admiration for your job as a cabin crew. It looks like a glamourour job to many but actually it is a very tough job – Odd and long hours and very service oriented.

I wish you all the best of happiness and safe flights.

    Take care,

    Hi Rachel,

I’ve read your entire blog and I’ve started to follow you on Instagram. Glad to see your doing good and you love your job.

I am considering to apply ( again ) to Emirates, but I’m always afraid. I’me very attached to my family, and scared to leave them. The last time I applied I went to the final interview, but they could see that I was in panic to leave, so I stayed. Two years now, and I tried again, applied online and they called me for an assessment day in September. But now all doubts are coming again. How do you deal with this? I really need some help, and you seem to be so nice, hope you can talk to me and help me somehow.

    Thanks,

Raquel (my name is the Portuguese version for Rachel!!!)

    • August 25, 2015 / 1:51 pm

Hi Raquel! Glad you like my blog. For me I’ve always been quite independent so it’s never been a big problem being away from my family. I think it is definitely tough at the beginning when you’re new here but once you start making friends you make your own little “Dubai family” which is what gets you through the tough days! And once you’ve started flying a few months you can bid for a string of days off and get a flight home to see your family for a few days πŸ™‚ Hope this helps a bit, let me know how the assessment day goes!

      • Raquel
        August 25, 2015 / 2:03 pm

        Thanks for the fast reply!!!
I’ll go on the 12th September, and then we’ll see.
I thought I was independent because I left home to study and it was far from my town, but I always knew it was the same country and I would get home anytime soon. This is really the only thing that scares me (besides spiders :P). And then, there is other thing, I dream about starting a family and find my prince charming, and I’m afraid to lose that opportunity because if I go I won’t have time then to even think about it. What’s your opinion on this?

        Big kiss, thanks for everything,

        • August 25, 2015 / 2:06 pm

Don’t worry too much about it, I think the more you think about it the worse it gets. So concentrate on enjoying Dubai and making friends and remember that everyone is in the same situation! πŸ™‚
As for finding your prince charming…don’t worry, you’ll have more than enough days off and plenty of free time to find someone worthy! πŸ™‚

    Hello!

I somehow stumbled upon your blog here searching info on Dubai and your posts are fantastic! Great photos of your travels as well. I have just recently been accepted into the Emirates cabin crew program and my scheduled date of joining is this October! Super excited !!.. ahh! And a little nervous at the same time, as I have never traveled to the Middle East! Is there any advice you could give for a newbie flight stewardess? As far as training goes? Oh, and what all to pack?! I have way to many clothes lol :/ Can’t wait to explore Dubai and the rest of the world! What a dream! I love checking out yummy restaurants and sightseeing, old and new places too. Would love to hear your comments, thanks in advance! I really appreciate it.. happy flying! πŸ™‚

    Regards,
    Hannah

    • August 23, 2015 / 12:32 am

Hi there! So glad you found my blog πŸ™‚ Congrats on getting the job, I’m sure you’ll love it! With regards to packing….don’t bring as much as you think you need! I came over here with 4 suitcases (yes, slightly ridiculous) and half the stuff I brought out with me I haven’t worn since! Make sure to pack a big variety of stuff as you’ll be going to cold destinations as well. I’m not really sure what other advice to give, it feels like so long since I came out here! But if you have any other questions I’ll be very happy to try and help πŸ™‚ x

    Hi Rachel
I literally spent my entire Saturday (the one that just past) reading your blog, from the first entry to the latest one.
I found it to be so informative and entertaining and it incorporated all the good and the bad along with it. It has been such a great read thus far.
I too, have a love for travelling and although I’ve only been around South Africa (my home country) I always find that there is ALWAYS something new that you have not encountered or experienced before.
Being a BA in Tourism student, I’m always trying to figure out what I will be doing once I’ve graduated but I know it has to incorporate travelling. The world is my oyster and I really want to experience the world while I can to the fullest. I came across your blog as well as your friend Taylors blog (also a brilliant one!) and I’ve made the decision that I’ll be applying to be part of the Emirates Cabin Crew in 2016 (due to the fact that it would be my final year at Uni and all).
Through your blog, I felt really encouraged and I can only hope that next year will be a success.

Thank you Rachel and all the best

P.S if you happen to have a layover in Cape Town again, you have to go see Table Mountain and Robben Island (its better during summer though) xx

    • July 29, 2015 / 7:26 pm

Hi there! Thanks for your long comment πŸ™‚ Really glad you found my blog and enjoyed reading it. Good luck for your final year at uni and once you apply for the job! πŸ™‚ I certainly hope I get a Capetown trip again, it was one of my favourite cities!

    • July 29, 2015 / 7:23 pm

Hi, thanks for reading! πŸ™‚ You will definitely still be considered, if you haven’t completed high school there is a test you can do on the open day. I can remember that there was a girl in my open day who hadn’t finished her high school but she still got the job! Good luck πŸ™‚

    Rachel,

I love reading your blog and I hope to be following in your footsteps. I am a recent college graduate with two degrees (BA: Sociology, BS: Applied Behavior Analysis). I studied abroad to 14 different countries and I felt like my resume was on point when I submitted it to Emirates. I know I surpass all of the basic qualifications, including the English test. Is there anything I should do in the meantime? I’m working on learning another language, Spanish, but otherwise that, I’m nervous!! I’m just hoping and praying that I get a call back…Would you mind looking at my resume to see if I’d be a good fit? I know your busy but this opportunity would be a dream come true.

        • June 18, 2015 / 9:47 pm

You can wear pretty much whatever you want in Dubai! It’s a very open and Western city but you should still respect the culture and in places such as malls dress a little more modestly (i.e. cover shoulders and knees). There are two main phone providers, Etisalat and Du, and they both have mobile data plans!

Have you spent much time in China? I’m thinking about taking a 3 week trip with a friend at the end of this summer all around China. I have heard both positive and negative things. I’ve been to Hong Kong, but I know it is very different from the mainland. I knew some flight crew for your same airline that tried to avoid China, so that concerns me. I would love to hear your opinions!

    • April 29, 2015 / 5:26 pm

No, I’ve only been to Beijing and Shanghai a couple of times! (As well as Hong Kong plenty of times, but as you say, that’s very different to Mainland China!) I personally am not a massive fan, but I’ve seen some places that look absolutely beautiful!

Hi! I’m planning to apply for Emirates cabincrew position. At the moment I’m looking for information about any courses and training that Emirates may offer regarding IATA/ticketing, reservation systems etc. I finished BTEC Level 3 in Travel & Tourism. I want to become a stewardess but I’m aware that it’s not a lifelong career. After working as an air hostess, I’d like to stay within the tourism industry, possibly with Emirates. I was wondering if the company gives you an opportunity to gain any qualifications which would help you to progress to other job role in the future?
P.S Great blog! Looking forward to next posts πŸ™‚

Hi Rachel, I just wanted to say I love your blog πŸ™‚ I have a bit of an odd question, does the company you work for stipulate any rules surrounding what you are allowed to blog about or post pictures of or do you have free reign to talk about whatever you fancy? Alice xxx

    • March 18, 2015 / 4:52 pm

Thanks for reading πŸ™‚ Well we do have a social media talk during the first induction week, obviously this was a while ago but basically they don’t want us posting anything negative! Mostly I keep my posts travel related and not work related πŸ™‚

  54. March 17, 2015 / 2:22 pm

    Hey Rachel πŸ™‚

I just got an email telling me that I were succesful at the interview (AWESOME), however I have to consider some things, since I have a serious relationship here in Denmark and moving to UAE would probably be a big challenge for my girlfriend, so I would like to be able to tell her how often she can visit me to comfort her more. I read that you only pay 10% of flight tickets when working as cabin crew, pretty amazing :), but would I be able to buy flight tickets for my girlfriend with this discount? And how often is it possible to go home? I’m pretty sure you fly to Copenhagen so I imagine that I could maybe try to get as many flights as possible to there and then visit my gf. What do you think?

And very cool blog, I skimmed all of your posts πŸ™‚

    • March 18, 2015 / 4:51 pm

Congratulations! πŸ™‚ Well you’re right about the discounted flights, however these are only for you and immediate family. (You get unlimited discounted tickets per year, parents and siblings get 2 tickets each per year). We have “special tickets” which are discounted tickets for non-family members, but these are not as cheap and also not always available to buy. Copenhagen is a highly desired flight so you’d be lucky to get it often, especially in your first 6 months – 1 year of flying. Not trying to put you off here, just trying to be realistic πŸ™‚ But of course you could go on the flight as a passenger, although I think you can’t leave Dubai on your days off the first 6 months if I remember correctly!

  55. March 17, 2015 / 12:40 pm

Wow! .i am really happy and motivated by the effort put in by you. Amazing blog, I have hardly seen any cabin crew member doing this. You have added fuel to my fire of exploring the world. Keeping rocking!

  56. March 13, 2015 / 9:19 pm

Congrats! πŸ™‚ I bought an iPhone 6 a few months ago and since I’ve had it almost all of my photos are taken on there! However I do have a Nikon S8200 which is a brilliant point and shoot camera. I used it on almost every layover and it’s not too big but still takes great quality pictures.
I actually just upgraded now to a Nikon D5300, which is an incredible camera (hence the price tag!). I’m still getting to grips with it and have mostly just been using it on automatic for now (I’ve had it less than 2 weeks!) but the picture quality is so good. I’ll pop some pictures up on here soon. Sorry for the long answer haha! x

I have been thinking about applying to work with emirates cabin crew for quite a while now, I am currently in my final year at university and hope to apply sometime next year. Heey Rachel!! What a nice blog, i have spent a few hours the last weeks surfing around…so jealous! I actually have a question for you that is driving me crazy! I have been invited to the assesment day next week but I am a bit worry about the tattoos policy. I have a tattoo on my forearm but when filling the application I assume the uniforms are long sleeves so that will not be a problem. Today i just found out thet it could also be short sleeve and then i will have a problem. What can you tell me about this? Do you think they will consider hiring someone with a tattoo and provide long sleeve shirt if the person is right for the position? Thanks a lot for your help and keep posting in your blog, we love it! πŸ™‚

Thanks for reading πŸ™‚ Well my airline (along with most major airlines) are pretty strict when it comes to tattoos. Absolutely no visible tattoos allowed, and as females are required to wear only short sleeve shirts yours sounds like it would be visible. Sorry πŸ™

I there I’m very curious and interested in joining this company, and was looking for info on the training that you did, and just your experience of it all ? Thanks a million πŸ™‚

    • January 15, 2015 / 12:58 pm

If you look back at some of my older posts (Dec 2012 – Feb 2013) I’ve got quite a bit of info on the whole interview and training πŸ™‚ Hope this helps a bit!

Hello!! Love your blog. I read thru almost all your posts within an hr. Lol thanks for sharing!!!! It’s all so great to hear about your wonderful experiences.

I was wondering roughly how much is the salary for starting new flight attendants with emirates ( you can list a rough number if you are not allowed to expose it) and if the benefits allow your family, parents and spouse to have free tickets or discount tickets if so how many percent off. Thanks!!

        • February 4, 2015 / 9:25 pm

Hi, thanks for reading πŸ™‚ I don’t really feel comfortable sharing my salary on the internet. I’m sure you can find a rough estimate on the airline website if you are looking to apply as cabin crew. We get discounted standby travel for immediate family (and ourselves) where we pay just the tax. This is about 10-20% of the regular ticket price!

I love your blog! Great to see all your experiences in Dubai and around the world. Just a question- I find you hardly ever get flights to Africa, even though there’s many destinations there. Is there a reason for that?

    • January 5, 2015 / 3:32 pm

Glad you enjoy my blog πŸ™‚ It’s true, I rarely get flights to Africa any more! The reason being that since I’ve upgraded to business class, I fly almost exclusively on the A380, and we don’t have any African destinations on the A380 πŸ™

Hello! I am about to apply to Emirates as cabin crew and I was wondering if I could ask you some questions regarding working there. My email is vanzoelen@gmail.com, so if you have some time, I would really appreciate any info!

Hi Jan, you can send me any questions on Twitter or on here, I prefer not to give out my personal email πŸ™‚

    Hey Rachel,

I recently just got accepted as cabin crew for the same company you are working for, and I have been looking all over the internet for someone who works for the company AND finds the time to keep blogging every month! Your blog has been so helpful and insightful to what life is like in that position, I am so excited to start! I can see that it has ups and downs, and I can’t believe how many people aren’t up for adventuring all the time! I hope I get to fly with people like you who are down to explore, because isn’t that the point? Haha hopefully we get to fly together someday! Again thanks for the insight, I feel a lot less nervous!

Hi! Thanks for reading, glad you found my blog! I loved Chicago, think it’s my favourite place that I’ve visited in the US! Congrats on getting the job! I agree, we should make the most of getting to visit all these amazing cities! Although I have to admit, after some flights all I want to do (and do actually do) is get into bed and sleep πŸ˜› When are you joining?

      • December 2, 2014 / 8:09 am

        Hey!
I have an on hold e-mail still, it is driving me nuts, but I am glad I get to enjoy time with my friends and family. It looks like a bunch of other on holdees just got their JFIP status today, so I am thinking I will be end of Jan, early Feb! I think your right about sleeping, I have all these ideas about what I will do, but i’ll probably sleep.. A lot. πŸ™‚

Update on this: 1/15 is when I join! πŸ™‚

20 now. I heard that you can apply with 3 months before you make 21. Is this true?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi! Yes I think that sounds about right, though don’t take my word for it! I applied about 3 weeks before my 21st birthday and they actually called me to tell me I got the job before I turned 21! Good luck πŸ™‚

    Hi

I love your blog its incredibly helpful in my preparation for whats to come. I’ll be attending the Openday on the 20th here in Cape Town πŸ™‚

Anyway, i may be jumping the gun abit, but I wanted to know what you would suggest are the essential items that you’d recommend to bring from home when you make your way to Dubai, Clothing, appliances, anything…

Also, as i am assuming you only get your first paycheck once your training is completed, which is a month later? How much money would you suggest as a minimum to live comfortably in Dubai for any needs until you receive that first paycheck? In Dirhams.

Thanks so so much! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    • September 11, 2014 / 11:02 am

Thanks for reading, glad my blog is helpful! πŸ™‚ I’d say don’t bring as much as you think you need….I brought so much stuff and half of it hasn’t been used at all! Clothing wise just bring things that you’d wear normally, and appliances you don’t really need to bring anything as the flat is furnished. I honestly can’t remember how much money I spent during training, you definitely need a few thousand dirhams to see you through the first couple of months though as the first few pay checks are pretty small! Good luck for your interview! πŸ™‚

Hi Rachel! Im considering applying to Emirates this month πŸ™‚ I sooo anxious already from what I have heard the interviews can be quite stressful. Anyway what i would like to know is how much time do you have for yourself? Is there some quota of flying hours you need to fulfill? and how often do you get to travel apart from layovers…I take it that most layovers are no more than 24hours
I would really appreciate your response and advice πŸ™‚
Who knows, I may be working alongside you soon enough! πŸ˜€

    • September 11, 2014 / 10:52 am

Great decision, good luck with your application πŸ™‚ I do have a lot of free time, I work around 80-100 hours a month! Obviously if I have leave then it’s a bit less, and sometimes it can be more and then I feel like I’m flying non-stop! Yes most layovers are around 24 hours. If I have a few days off in a row I’ll try and travel, I like to make the most of my staff travel benefits! πŸ™‚

Hey Rachel! I love reading your blog as well, very inspiring! I just read the post about you making the announcement in german. Does EK arrange for people who speak the countries language to fly to that country? So since I speak german, spanish, english and french they would give me flights where the countries language is one of them?

Liebe Grüße und hâr bitte nie auf zu schreiben!

    Melody

    • May 7, 2014 / 7:29 pm

Hi Melody, thanks for reading πŸ™‚
Each flight has to have a “language speaker” but since there are sooo many crew it totally depends on rostering whether or not you get allocated flights to countries where you speak the language. I also speak Spanish yet I’ve only had one flight to Madrid…whereas they will often send me to Germany/Switzerland as the only German speaker. So I guess it varies a lot! πŸ™‚

Hello! I love your blog! <3 It's so nice to read about your adventures and I love browsing through all the pictures you've taken on your trips (β˜†^γƒΌ^β˜†) I'm to become a flight attendant with Etihad next month and I was wondering if I could email you and ask you couple of questions? Like, what's it like to be a flight attendant and caucasian girl living in the UAE and whatnot? Thank you so much!
    Best regards, Melissa

    • March 23, 2014 / 1:02 pm

Hi, thank you for reading πŸ™‚ Congrats on getting the job with Etihad, very exciting! I don’t actually have an email other than my private one, so any questions you have you can just ask on here if that’s ok πŸ™‚
And to be honest, living in Dubai is just like living anywhere else in the world 95% of the time! xx

        March 28, 2014 / 10:41 pm

Fantastic! =) I’m just “worried” about few things. One hears silly rumours so I’m curious. I reckon A.D and Dubai aren’t that different, but do you feel you can wear anything you want? I have read books about A.D and UAE and every book says girls can wear what they want, but loose clothing that covers legs and chest is strongly adviced Ξ£(γ‚œγƒγ‚œ;) Lols it’s not like I wear really tight dresses and have my boobs hanging out, but I do like shorts and short skirts. And I like well fitted dresses and pants, so I’m slightly concerned that I’m going to get unwanted attention on daily basis.
About internet. I love youtube and streaming tv shows online and reading japanese comics online, but rumour has it that many popular websites are blocked in the UAE (β•ΉΠ΄β•Ή;) Can I still access facebook, tumblr, youtube etc in A.D? Heh is downloading music and movies also a big no-no? I surf a lot online, so I’d be sad if I couldn’t access my favourite sites in A.D =/
Another rumour I heard was that when you arrive at the airport the customs may confiscate your laptop and keep it for few days to check you don’t have any inappropriate material O.O
Thank you so much Rachel! Based on your blog it seems like you are really enjoying being a flight attendant and living in Dubai ^_^ I have never been to the UAE so I’d like to hear from people who are living there, or have lived there =D

        Have a lovely weekend!!
        xx Melissa

        • April 5, 2014 / 2:33 am

With regards to clothing, I’m pretty sure whatever you wear now will be absolutely fine, and you’ll get used to it within a couple of days once you see what everyone else is wearing. So I really wouldn’t worry too much about that πŸ™‚
I’m not sure about Abu Dhabi, but in Dubai I can download (PirateBay, torrents etc), go on all the normal websites etc, nothing different to back home πŸ™‚ And I’ve never heard that about laptops being confiscated haha I expect it’s just a rumour!
